Upon getting a new set, I would build the new ship per the instructions. Then look at it for maybe 10 minutes. Then take it apart and build it differently. Or even better, combine the parts with other sets to come up with a unique creation of my own. I’d like the image of spaceship benny can print on a cell phone cover and wanted to ask if this is possible.

If you are interested in LEGO Classic Space designs, I highly recommend the book LEGO Space: Building the Future by Peter Reid and Tim Goddard. It is full of amazing LEGO Space creations in the spirit of LEGO Classic Space, and even includes instructions for some of the models. (Below is a beautiful updated rendition of the #928 LEGO Galaxy Explorer by Peter.) I have reviewed this book previously here: LEGO Book – LEGO Space: Building the Future I had no interest in Classic Space until this topic about Benny’s Spaceship came up. But I now find them sorta interesting. the old Lego is always strange to look at for me. The only Space themes I really like are Galaxy Squad and Star Wars, and that wasn’t until recently (2012-ish for SW).

I’ve not built anything with Legos for 30+ years. But, after all this time, I did manage to save 3 intact original creations of mine built with Classic Lego Space parts. They have not been changed since 1982. The price. Despite the low piece count, the minifigure collection alone sells this set. The extra builds are a bonus. Fikko!! I just had a brilliant idea!!! We can read every sinle piece of Bionicle-related literature that exists, and form a timeline!! Many modern Lego instructions include a part list at the end of the booklet. In the case of multiple booklets the list might be found in the middle of the PDF. The most iconic LEGO Classic Space set is the #928 LEGO Galaxy Explorer released in 1979. There were also a couple of smaller ships designed in the same style and released the same year; the #918 LEGO Space Transport, and the #924 LEGO Space Cruiser. Many other sets came out of the LEGO Classic Space line all the way to 1986, when although the same logo remained, the color-scheme changed from gray & blue to white & blue. I don’t so much like the later sets, but the earlier ones are some of the best LEGO sets ever designed.

Some people are really into old LEGO sets; some because they grew up with them, and others like them even if they were born later. (Like we talked about Fabuland the other day, which has a lot of young fans.) I also mostly prefer the newer themes, but there are also some old ones I really like; Classic Space, some Classic Castle, Fabuland…Despite that the initial line only consisted of 4-5 regular vehicles, (The Meteor Monitor feels a bit off to be part of the line-up) and one base, the line maintans a large fanbase. Once this is all done you need to continue with the level, once you are able to build each part of the ship (master build this is high lighting three things green), you do this for all three with Benny of course once the last one is complete!

The movie is coming on in 5 minutes. So I’ll be building the thing while watching the movie. How cool is that ? Most Lego sets are suited to play with from age 4 and up, because of the small parts they include. The special Duplo theme is suited for children aged 1,5 and up. The recommended age is always mentioned on the box.The piece numbers on this set are extremely low, at less than 70, but let’s face it, you’re not buying this set for the rudimentary builds, this is very much about the minifigures on offer. Aren’t they glorious? Benny’s Space Squad is made up of a colourful collection of clones with similar names, Jenny, Kenny, and Lenny and with the exception of their colour you can’t tell them apart. This ship could have been cut straight out of a 1980’s classic space set and you’d never know the difference and I LOVE IT. 13 pieces make up this beauty and every one of them has been used brilliantly to create something worthy of Benny’s spaceship obsession in this budget set. The two biggest contributers to the discolouring of the plastic of Lego toys are long term exposure to sunlight and cigarette smoke. Try to minimise these when storing your Playmobil.
